The Hunt for Gollum

When Peter Jackson made the Lord of the Rings movies, it was one of the most interesting film projects of all times to me. Here someone tried to capture the glory of Tolkiens books. Books that I had read with a flashlight at night until my eyes hurt the first time, because I just couldn't stop reading... who cares about bedtime or school next day, when there's an epic like that to follow?

I was a sceptic of Jackson's work at first. But then I sat in the first movie...
He had won me over already, when the Nazgul nearly found the hobbits hiding behind the tree root. The only thing I was sad about after the movie was having to wait a year until the next one hit the cinemas.

Now, a team of fans went ahead to make a FREE new movie set in the Lord of the Rings world. The Hunt for Gollum is due 3rd May 2009. And after watching the trailer, this familiar tingling returned to me... I can't await to watch the whole of this free project.

Two thumbs up!

Also, through their website, I found several other fan/web/free movie sites.
So also keep a keen eye on Born of Hope and Human Residue!

LOTRO & Machinima

So, when last I posted to this blog my next goal was to write an article about Lord of the Rings Online. Everything went according to plan, just like with World of Warcraft. Only, I got hooked by that game big style and so spent the next months either gaming there or working on various other non-blogging projects.

Is LOTRO better than WOW?
That's a discussion you find just about everywhere in the net.

My personal opinion is: It worked - and works - a lot better for me.
And the main reasons for that are: (not necessarily in that order)

1. I am a big Tolkien fan and they did a great job creating the game world. I re-read the book and even some tiny details found their way into the game.
2. I met nice and supportive people from the very beginning, that share - or at least accept - the kicks I get from the game. (Roleplaying a bit, generally sight-seeing... questing, but not big instance raids... and the monster play, of course...)

So, I also found a good use for Ning Forums as our Guild/Tribe forums.

Another thing LOTRO re-vitalized in me is my love for creating short movies.... In this case Machinima movies.

Watch and enjoy... (For better quality go directly to YouTube and watch in High Quality mode)

Ning.com - Your own social network!

Do you have enough of Facebook and MySpace? Hatebook.org ain't your style either?

Absolutely no problem. Distance yourself from the mass consumers and start your own social network on Ning.com!

The creation process is so easy anyone can have a decent looking network going in minutes. A few basic selection as to appearance, if you want this to be an open or closed network, a selection of the features you want to provide for your users and you are ready to launch it.

If you aren't happy with your choices you can also delete the whole network and start over again. You can also own several networks at the same time, e.g. one for your family and one for your friends and colleagues.

For the slightly more advanced network creator: You can also directly change the CSS, so you essentially have a lot of freedom when it comes to layout.

So what features does Ning.com include?

Basically most of what Facebook and MySpace have to offer is available on Ning.com, too.

Features include uploads of photos (yes, another place to brag with your vacation albums), music, videos (you can also link to YouTube or any of the other major online video sites).

You also get a Blog, which is pretty much a clone of the MySpace blog, a forum... and for those who come to Ning.com pampered by Facebook, there are gadgets. Not as many as on FB, but already quite a lot of them.

So, after a few minutes - and adding an extra quickly made logo I did with GIMP - my social network was ready for the first guests and I invited a few friends to have a look and give me some feedback on what they think about Ning.com.

The Golden Compass

Waiting for the movie I already found my daemon... Well, it's the second demon, the first one got lost in mail, had a cooler name and was of the same species...

It kind of proves a point: This is easy to program but will keep people interested.

Some output enriches every site!

It's also fun, so go there find your daemon!

dadhacker.com

This guy really should write a book! Only, he already has done that in a bloggin way the last 5 or so years!

If you were a computer geek back in the glorious 80s, dadhacker.com will show you some behind the scenes articles you'll love. (Specifially on Atari and Apple...).

If you are a programmer: Learn that you're not the only one going through a hell of pain with your usual marketing types.

What more to say? Enjoy!
